The vision and tireless efforts of two of its distinguished alumni led to the formation of the Andhra Medical College Old Students Association (AMCOSA).

As the founding architects of the association, their dedication and legacy continue to be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
In 1966, Prof. P. Brahmayya Sastry and Prof. Vyaghreswarudu, together with fellow professors, went around King George Hospital inviting alumni to become members of the association. House surgeons were admitted as associate members on payment of ₹10, laying the foundation for AMCOSA’s expanding membership.
The first AMCOSA Day was celebrated on January 28, 1967 and inaugurated by eminent alumnus Lt. Col. Dr. M. V. Ramana Murthy, the last Surgeon General of the erstwhile combined Madras Province, marking a historic milestone in the association’s journey.

The constitution established the foundation and long-term vision of AMCOSA with the following key objectives:
The purpose of the AMCOSA Guest House is to house the Association’s office and provide accommodation at a nominal rent for outstation members when they visit Visakhapatnam and/or their Alma Mater.
With the Golden Jubilee of Andhra Medical College in 1973 as the target, Prof. P. Brahmayya Sastry, Prof. Vyaghreswarudu, and a dedicated team worked tirelessly to secure a permanent site for AMCOSA. Their efforts culminated in G.O. Ms. No. 2187 (Health), dated 3 December 1970, granting 4,000 sq. yds. of land on a 99-year lease.
Dr. Ramesh Pai, former Principal of Andhra Medical College and Director of Medical & Health Services, played a pivotal role in this landmark achievement despite not being an alumnus, reflecting his deep affection and commitment to the institution.

The foundation stone for the AMCOSA Golden Jubilee Guest House was laid on March 22, 1971 by the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri K. Brahmananda Reddy, marking a historic milestone for the Association.

To fund the construction, Prof. P. Brahmayya Sastry, Prof. Vyaghreswarudu, and a dedicated team including Profs. G. M. Narayana Swamy, N. T. Subrahmanyam, B. Swami, and S. R. Ranganathan undertook fundraising tours across the state, raising an impressive ₹2 lakh.
Driven by extraordinary dedication, Prof. Vyaghreswarudu personally drove the team on these journeys, bearing the travel expenses himself. Their perseverance and selfless commitment transformed AMCOSA’s vision into reality.
Although the AMCOSA Golden Jubilee Guest House was not completed in time for the Golden Jubilee of Andhra Medical College in 1973, determined efforts ensured its successful completion. The Government of Andhra Pradesh, under Chief Minister Sri Jalagam Vengala Rao, sanctioned ₹50,000 for construction and furnishings.
Prof. L. Suryanarayana, then Principal of Andhra Medical College, secured the grant and contributed an additional ₹10,000 from the Golden Jubilee fund. When electrification and fittings required another ₹10,000, Prof. Vyaghreswarudu generously donated the entire amount, making the Guest House ready for occupation.
In 1985, the AMCOSA Guest House underwent a major facelift with the construction of a front compound wall and barbed wire fencing on the remaining three sides to protect the premises. To promote academic activities and support the Guest House’s upkeep, the AMCOSA Charitable Trust was established in 1988–89 and registered under the Societies Act. Donations to the Trust were granted Income Tax exemption under Section 80G, encouraging alumni to contribute towards AMCOSA’s enduring mission.
During the tenure of Prof. M. Subba Rao as President, ₹1.5 lakhs was invested in renovating the association’s facilities, including repairs to the flooring and kitchen. The successful execution of these works was largely due to the initiative and resourcefulness of Prof. Ch. Gnaneswar, then Secretary.
At the same time, Prof. A. Chakrapani Rao played a vital role in updating and organizing the Association’s records, reflecting his dedication and tireless service to AMCOSA.
Following the successful Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 1998, the Executive Committee led by Prof. S. V. Adinarayana Rao took the landmark decision to construct a Multipurpose Conference Hall to host academic, executive, cultural, and social events.
To oversee this ambitious project, a Building Committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. M. S. Raju, with responsibility for the construction, completion, maintenance, and financial management of the project until all associated liabilities were cleared.
The building plan for the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium was approved by the Municipal Corporation on 16 July 1999, followed by the Bhoomi Puja in July 1999. Construction commenced with the laying of the RCC slab on 5 November 1999 and was completed in a remarkable one year.
Spread over 7,500 sq. ft., the centrally air-conditioned and acoustically treated auditorium was designed to seat 400–450 people comfortably. It was inaugurated on 27 August 2000 by the then AMCOSA President, Dr. S. V. Adinarayana Rao, and has since served as the Association’s premier venue for academic, cultural, and alumni events.
In the second phase of development, the Golden Jubilee Guest House underwent a comprehensive renovation. A new entrance and lobby were created on the northeastern side, leading to a centrally air-conditioned mini hall with a seating capacity of 50–60 members, while the existing guest rooms were also refurbished.
Although the renovation significantly enhanced the facility, its lower ground-level location continued to pose maintenance challenges, particularly during cyclones, when waterlogging became a recurring issue.
AMCOSA gratefully acknowledges the generous financial support of the following individuals and organizations, whose contributions made this project a reality.
The construction of the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium received extraordinary support from Dr. S. V. Adinarayana Rao, who donated ₹7.8 lakhs through organizations including the Satya Sai Foundation Trust, Dr. Vyaghreswarudu Polio Foundation, and the Free Polio Surgical & Research Foundation. He also extended an interest-free loan of ₹27 lakhs to the Association.
His exceptional generosity and unwavering commitment were instrumental in making the project a reality, leaving a lasting legacy in AMCOSA’s history.
The construction of the first floor over the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium commenced after receiving Municipal approval (B.A. No. 11338/04/ACPI dated 13-10-2004). Under the leadership of Dr. Ch. Gnaneswar, the project was financed through a ₹10 lakh loan from Bharat Overseas Bank and a ₹5 lakh overdraft from Andhra Bank, with repayments planned from auditorium rental income.
The first floor was inaugurated by Dr. Ch. Gnaneswar on April 17, 2006. Flooring and air-conditioning were subsequently completed in time for the AMC Alumni Global Meet 2008, further enhancing the auditorium’s facilities.
Following the untimely demise of Dr. Ch. Gnaneswar on July 20, 2007, a Special Executive Committee meeting was convened on July 31, 2007, during which Dr. K.V.G.K. Tilak, then Vice-President, was unanimously elected as President.
Under the leadership of Dr. K.V.G.K. Tilak, with Dr. M.S. Raju (Secretary and Chairman, Building Committee), Dr. P. Visweswara Rao (Treasurer), Dr. S.V. Adinarayana Rao (Past President), and the Executive Committee, it was decided to organize the AMC Alumni Global Meet 2008, held on December 27–28, 2008.
AMCOSA honoured its distinguished alumni and mentors through lasting tributes.
