Demonstrating its continued commitment to advancing healthcare and supporting its alma mater, the Andhra Medical College Old Students’ Association (AMCOSA) has contributed ₹30 lakh towards the establishment of Mother’s Milk Bank at King George Hospital (KGH), Visakhapatnam. The landmark project, with a total cost of ₹2.30 crore, has been made possible through the generous support of AMCANA (₹1 crore), Sushena Health Foundation (₹1 crore), and AMCOSA (₹25 lakh), reflecting a shared commitment to improving neonatal healthcare.

AMCOSA Supports KGH’s Mother’s Milk Bank

The Mother’s Milk Bank, along with a Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre (CLMC), will provide safe, pasteurized donor milk to premature, low-birth-weight, critically ill, and orphaned newborns, as well as infants whose mothers are unable to breastfeed. The CLMC will also offer breastfeeding counselling, lactation support, and promote awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and milk donation, creating a comprehensive support system for mothers and newborns.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Dr. P. V. Sudhakar, General Secretary of AMCOSA and Former Principal of Andhra Medical College, described the project as a landmark step in strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare in Andhra Pradesh. He highlighted that access to safe donor milk can significantly improve survival and long-term health outcomes for vulnerable newborns while reinforcing breastfeeding as the best source of infant nutrition. He also appreciated the collaborative efforts of AMCANA, Sushena Health Foundation, government agencies, healthcare institutions, and all donors who helped make the project a reality.

As one of the state’s premier tertiary care teaching hospitals, King George Hospital manages thousands of deliveries and neonatal admissions each year. The establishment of the Milk Bank will enhance neonatal intensive care services by ensuring the availability of screened and pasteurized donor milk, a medically proven intervention that reduces complications and improves survival among premature and medically fragile infants.

For decades, AMCOSA has remained dedicated to supporting Andhra Medical College and King George Hospital through initiatives that strengthen medical education, healthcare infrastructure, research, and patient care. Its contribution to this pioneering project reflects the Association’s enduring commitment to giving back to the institution and serving the community through meaningful healthcare initiatives.

The establishment of Andhra Pradesh’s first Mother’s Milk Bank stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration between alumni, philanthropic organizations, healthcare professionals, and government agencies. AMCOSA is proud to be part of this historic initiative, reaffirming its commitment to advancing excellence in healthcare and helping provide a healthier beginning for countless newborns across the state.
